The three periods are 初伏, 中伏 and 末伏. They are counted by the 庚 days of the sixty-day cycle, starting on the third 庚 day after the summer solstice, so the dates move every year. 中伏 lasts ten or twenty days and the other two ten each. In everyday speech people say 三伏天.
